A key question is whether humans are really capable of doing anything technological that doesn't have (intended or unintended) negative consequences. There is an American author (sorry, forgetting his name) who has a series where the main character believed life on Earth is a kind of boot camp such that it's all about training for something later, with a lot of bad experiences built in and nasty opposing beings inevitably there to make life sufficiently hellish so we don't ever get complacent or comfy. I've no clue if that's real, although I can't help but think it's actually one of the more positive interpretations of what this life about, since we aren't having much success improving the quality of life on Earth.
Far beyond the brochures, doesn't it all go back to "the great deceiver" evil types presented in the story of Adam and Eve? Whether real or not, the wisdom is present and what will not be addressed.
(FYI: Las Vegas has grown so much that it has outgrown the water supply from Lake Meade which keeps getting lower requiring new lower pipelines to extract water. The city there has recycled sewage and toilet water for a long time. Those in the know have reverse osmosis systems. Recycled water contains the chemicals that abound like estrogens from birth control pills and who knows what.)
