These people have such a childish view of the world -- that the ideal life is one of unbridled hedonism and instant gratification. That true happiness is a consequence of having every whim and desire fully sated.

A wise aphorism I can’t forget is that the greatest affliction of all is never to have been afflicted. Wisdom is forged through tribulation.

Many are the stories of those who have triumphed in spite of horrible circumstances and suffering and we all find those stories uplifting. There’s a reason for that.

That’s a good point. They’re maybe only marketing it on the back of feckless selfishness.

NO. N.O. means NO. exactly what Beau said. They want us to forget what they did and are doing. They want us to forget the fires, forget the tortures, forget everything, forget who we are, forget who they are.

I can tell you that there are many in the field of psychiatry who would cherish the ability to erase traumatic memories for patients ... not surprising for a profession characterized by simple-minded hypotheses and solutions and subsidized for the most part by Big Pharma.

Sadly, not surprising at all!!

Becoming an anti-authoritarian seems (to me) a key component of becoming a full Person. It means acknowledging Spirit, which can never be controlled. And of course if one acknowledges Spirit one is less likely to submit to numbing pseudo-fixes which promote a despairing materialism. Thanks for the wise comments and the book recommendation, I could use a little encouragement!

"Anti-authoritarians" are indeed mentally ill, if we are to define one form of mental illness as "suffering from delusions", ie belief that something non-existent is real. By this definition "authoritarians" are also mentally ill, but they suffer less under the authority-concept than the "anti-authoritarian".

Because the truth is there is no such thing as "authority". We made it all up. The root word "author" means "father" or "creator". Sounds pretty nuts when one sees that we are meant to regard so-called authority as father/creator. And indeed, it is completely nuts.

Probably the authority-concept has roots in our having been children experiencing our parents who, for better or worse, naturally stood "higher" over us and commanded us as to what/what not to do/think/say. During pre-history, tribal peoples likely naturally came to respect & rely upon certain members who demonstrated the ability to make good choices that benefited the tribe. Such "wiser" folk came to be viewed by most as "superior" or "exalted" in some way. "All Hail The Great Raphael!" gets chanted and a statue is carved in your honor and placed in the town square.

Right then and there everything goes woefully awry for all of humanity. Permanently. Nothing but a slow march to Hell from that moment forward, in my view. Kings and Queens and Emperors and Pharoahs & their power/war/feudal/nation-state crap started up and we like it so much we never look back.

It's been tricky living for us easy-going, self-sufficient, peaceable folk ever since that first throne was built & some delusional a-hole was sufficiently full of himself to sit upon it. Always we are trying to duck and dodge the madness of the knee-jerk, hair-triggered, drooling zombie hordes who bow & worship The Great Cults of Ruling Powers and get offended and feel threatened upon seeing that some of us don't.

Hmmm.... that word "sovereign(ty)", shall we break that one down as well? Being as I am, I cannot resist.

Once we divest the authority-concept of its' silly clothing, the term "sovereign(ty)" falls into the dirt as well. Understanding the word-concept "sovereignty" is definitely a step in right direction, that is, if the goal is to extricate ourselves from the mind-fk of the authority-concept-- with it, we intend to reclaim for ourselves our entire being, body and mind, declaring ourselves "royal" beings free of external control. However, with this word we actually keep alive the authority-concept by transferring "authority" coming down from above/without and placing it coming up from below/within. "I am the authority of me." Which, etymologically speaking, is to say, "I am author/creator/father of myself." Here we see that we are still thinking in terms of hierarchy, superior/inferior beings, creator/created, kings and queens and ruling bodies and sh*t.

Sounds like b.s. to me-- pretty sure I did not create myself. Let's look at its' etymology:

late 14c., soverainte, "pre-eminence, excellence, superiority;" also "authority, rule, supremacy of power or rank,"

With the word "sovereign(ty)" we only imagine we've escaped. We hope that by declaration of our personal sovereignty that real-world authority-worshippers will now leave us alone through recognition of our declared status as royalty or supreme, pre-eminent beings? Hmmm...

Seems obvious enough to me we are not going to free our minds via use of the jailers' language. To speak the forked tongue of the serpent is to remain stuck within its' coiled sway and concede origin of thought within its' dark den. We go from being ruled by the snake to actually being the snake. ("Democracy" anyone?)

No need to complicate or over-think the whole mess. We are not free beings because we are "sovereign". We are free beings simply by virtue of our naturally-occurring existence. Like, you know, birds and sh*t.

“Everything faded into mist. The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.”

Creepy would-be masters of the matrix say yes.

But IMO the emotional componant of extremely traumatic memories needs to be safely lessened (breathed-through) to the point of tolerability, and the distortion of present time.

Having your buddy's head blown off on the battlefield is one example.

Helplessly watching a loved one being murdered, another.

Many abandonments or betrayals as well.

But the memory should remain.

Tessa ~ I sure wish I could include a photo of my beautiful older sister who died on this day in 1985. She was only twenty five years old. It is only through my God given memories that I am able to see the reel-to-reel movies of us playing as little girls in our room or being so happy to see her when I arrived at my first day of high school or the day she placed her first born son in my arms when she was nineteen!

I believe our memories are what keep us grounded in all of the confusion of life. God enabled us this amazing gift of memory and a strong beating heart so that we never forget the feeling of true loss and true love. His desire is for us to use these gifts for His good purposes, to love deeply and to care exceedingly. Without our memories, we are but wild animals adrift on the land. Through Christ, we are His beloved, completely capable to read and remember His Word, laid bare for anyone “with ears to hear and eyes to see”, so that we may know Him and follow Him so that all may go well with us as we live out our lives within His peace that He has freely offers to us all. GBY all! 🙏🏻

Memories are stored in the body. People who have no memory of childhood trauma still react to all the triggers. There're also plenty of heart transplant recipients who claim to have acquired "memories" upon receiving their donated heart.

I immediately thought of the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". That movie came close to breaking my heart, but these demons forgot the ending of it, when the human spirit and heart prevailed. I suspect they'll find this out, if they actually succeed at "erasing" memories.

It's certainly harder to argue your point with a mask on (microphone or not!) There is not a memory of mine I would erase, but maybe my life has been easy and nice. Think if soldiers erased their memories of war, only to sign up again for service because it seemed the 'right' thing to do.....!
