Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate it today! My people celebrate it in May this year.
May all of us give and receive forgiveness, love and joy!
To honor the spirit of joy—stubbornly hopeful and very legitimate joy—I feel it’s appropriate to share a quote from the story I sent out two years ago:
I have been thinking a lot about imperfection as a seemingly inalienable condition of human existence.
I’ve been thinking about how everything is so imperfect, and how in this imperfection, it’s the kindness that saves the day.
How you try, try, try to make something beautiful, and it’s never exactly how you thought it would be.
And you sweat, sweat, sweat to figure things out, and then you discover that you still have to wait, wait, wait for others to figure it out in their own individual way—and they might want to take their time and do it in zigzags—and that patience at those times is your only friend. Patience and indestructible faith in joy.
And you hope that somewhere, here and now or down the rainbow, there is a place where somebody will caress your head with infinite tenderness and honor your beautiful spirit in full and say, “It’s okay, your pain was not in vain, it’s been tough but you’ve prevailed. It’s been difficult, and this world is imperfect, but your compass was never at fault, and it carried us through, and it’s all good now, we can laugh, and dance, and love, and move on with joy. You are real. You’ve always been real. We’ve prevailed. Love is real, and so is joy. Let’s live!
It seems like in some mysterious way, at some point of the journey, kindness and forgiveness of ourselves and others become unavoidable, and we feel joy.
Here is a prayer for the imperfect, which I think is all people. And no matter who you are, where you are, and whatever challenges you are going through this very second, it’s your right to walk your journey with dignity, and it’s your sweetness to do things with love and from love. Your strong love. You can do things from a place of love because you are loved.
