My power company sends me this shale about how my energy usage compares to that of my neighbors. I would bet the farm they game those numbers to manipulate us. I'm all for saving money and using less energy, but I totally hear what you're saying, Tessa. There's cheese in the trap.
Based on what I read without looking very deeply into it, smart meter numbers are manipulated, and also people pay for the additional energy used to spy on them. :)
Long ago, I heard said that the more you (the reader) know about a subject, the more it is clear that journalists don't know what they are talking about. This posting is a great example of that. Your post is conspiratorial idiocy. I am unsubscribing. What a waste of my time and bandwidth.
That is such a nuanced way to express disagreement, Jeff! :-) And here I was politely and sincerely discussing something with you in comments to another article. Thank you for having been a subscriber in the past, and happy explorations!
"Over time, smart meters will allow us to offer new rate plans that provide incentives for behaviors, such as charging electric vehicles at off-peak hours or reducing their consumption during periods of peak usage, such as a day of extreme heat"
And please notice the weasel way of answering the person's question.
Thanks for pointing this out. I knew it was coming as I opted out of the "smart meter" for various reasons. Con Ed is not at all happy about my opting out so billing has become quite arduous (a way to try & get me on the "smart meter"). I generally take a picture of the meter with an actual digital camera since I also don't have a "smart-phone" surveillance device & send it by e-mail but they have consistently over-charged me which entails phone calls, re-establishing time-lines & a whole host of other mechanisms to make it difficult for me to maintain my "dumb" status. I used to be a super in a few buildings so I know how these things work etc. Anyways, just wanted to throw this info out there, I wonder if others who have "opted out" have found their normal electrical bill to become quite a pain in the neck to deal with!
you can opt out of a smart meter. Takes perseverance though. Way too much emf for our brains, so look where it is...hopefully not near children’s rooms!
Energy companies that once had capacity, but went "green" and decommissioned power plants and ended up with a finite resource where there once was affordable abundance. And then they tell everyone rolling blackouts are normal, and try to make you forget power was once abundant and affordable. Then they send "helpful" tips about how to save energy. Consumers say "sure" to save a few bucks...and then this happens:
It's a feature, not a flaw. That price for "green energy" that's never talked about when they shut down capacity. Would you have agreed to shut down the power plants "to save the planet" (lie) if you knew the real cost? Are there more who would agree to that than who wouldn't?
But,but, when we all use power during off-peak hours, the off-peak hours become the super-peak hours. What should we helpless idiots do now, mr super-technican ?
I wish more people believed in this Reset. People have to start paying attention to what is happening around them for example the FISA bill passing in Congress..The bill is to allow the FBI arrest American Citizens without a warrant. OH, except for the people in Government.. Get it more freedoms being taken away
Most of the conservative Boomers I know continue to get all their news off TV. They only go online for Facebook and bill payments. They dismiss alt sites like this automatically.
On the positive side they don't watch much CNN or read articles from the NYT or Daily Beast.
Puget Power in Olympia is sending mail soliciting enrollment in a program that will save you money but limit your thermostat during peak use. F no and FUJI. If you know, you know
I had the power company install a dump electrical meter so I can be the only smart in the house. I received ‘threats’ from the state, and the city representatives (elected officials !!) that I was wrong and told me smart meters are sooo good (for whom?) and other propaganda.
Action like this is exactly why I will NEVER install a remote programmable thermostat in my house. Utility companies offer them for free because they want to control the temp in your home per some lunatic control idea.
I like when they say “ win-win”. There’s no “ win” in tyranny. There’s no “ win” in slavery by ignorance or otherwise. I will run my electricity just to mess up their data. I won’t comply. Maybe I’ll be the next inventor of the water fuel car? No electricity, no fuel, no problem. That guy questionably met his demise after meeting with our gov. agents. Hmm.. 🙈 Gotta go, I’m off to buy a gas stove, maybe 2.
I am in the power business, and this is normal stuff. The fact that the US is running 70 years behind the rest of the world cannot be helped. If you want to go back to the middle ages, be my guest. We had our water heaters on time of use in the fifties in Holland, and that is purely a rational matter of load management. Look into the economics of the power grid a little bit and you will understand. You can accommodate everything in theory, but it becomes unaffordable, for the utilization of your distribution network will be very low, and prices very high.
By and large, I think Europe was quicker in these things exactly because energy prices tended to be higher. The US always was much more wasteful of energy.
Electric cars are already hurting California's grid pretty badly. Those and electric dryers are the "large appliances" of note. Water heaters should all be gas, as should dryers, but that's been made impossible in many places.
When everybody is on smart meters, everybody can be dialed down, overcharged and browned out.
I say this without bitterness. It is just what is coming (and much worse; look at the world.)
The climate insanity is going to cost us dearly, I have watched it for years. BEVs are an environmental disaster. The pushback has started, for the electrification plans that are being pushed by the politicians cannot be done. Nobody has the budget for building out the electrical infrastructure adequately. Meanwhile I am selling an additive that makes an ICE engine last 2-3 times longer and reduces particulates by 75%. Go figure.
My wife and I have a 1997 Ford Ranger (185k) (4 cylinder/manual), a 2007 Honda Fit (258k) and a 2009 Toyota Matrix (238k). In terms of lifetime resource use, we are more frugal than Prius or Leaf drivers. I mainly ride my bike during the week, too.
(Full synthetic 5W-30 is nice for engines. Change when brownish or 8-10k)
Interesting. Email me if you want to find out how to prolong the life of those engines by as much as 2-300%, and to reduce your emissions by 75%, improve your mileage by 10-20% and double your service intervals. (vliscony@gmail.com)
an odd time when all government messaging is a suspected poisoned pill. and perhaps sadder that there may actually be a poisoned pill beneath this 'common sense' request. hmmmm. the problem with paranoia when we are living in time when the government is trying to kill us throwing our own babies out with the bathwater.
i was in telecom engineering and in the 'old' days the rates varied by time of day because of the same issue: the capital cost of building giant infrastructure to accommodate the peak usage and shifting usage to times when the capital is mostly idle.
I am sure that just lie in everything else, there are multiple layers and angles to everything. However, ConEd has been preachy for months now, with their nudges and parent-like emails (which is not the place of a utility company, they are not our parents). And also, what happens when everyone starts using "off peak" and turns "off peak" into a new peak? The latter is not a rhetorical question, I am wondering out loud what happens when people are squeezed out of free usage by prices and all start using large electrical devices at night only (and freezing during the day?)
and i cannot help but notice that the people (mbas?) making these things 'happen' for our good pick (unconsciously) the oddest names and acronyms and stuff.
when i first read your comment i read 'conned' instead of 'coned'. with a relook i then went to 'cone-head' for some reason and actually saw images from snl and the rothschilds.
so another mba strory. every new 'thing' had to be big with a big splashy announcement and an inspiring name. project chipmunk was the name given when it was decided to contract out the logistics (warehousing and transport, a big part of the company). the construction managers were told they would meet to discuss the new system being implemented and to be ready to give your feed back which would be appreciated.
when they met they had many misgivings, shared them, and then were thanked and told 'it will begin in two weeks.' one said 'this won't work!' and was told that if he didn't like it he can put in his resignation papers.
so, after that, i have stories of the construction managers looking through boxes to find the stuff for their crews that the new contractor had shipped improperly, albeit meeting its minimum requirements and cost.
well, the province being served was bc canada. vancouver was the biggest city by factors of 10 or more. with the new contract everything that was purchased was shipped to calgary, which meant that all the stuff from asia was offloaded in vancouver, shipped to calgary, and then shipped back to vancouver.
and one of the characteristics of chipmunks and squirrels is that they lose about 80% of the nuts they store! so, a mba upgrade in logistics created huge logistical costs and lost stuff. likely not 80% most of the time, and yet that was the 'charming' animal name used to inspire us. seriously funny. and truly, rome burning while the accountants fiddled the books.
yes, the off peak movement to charging cars in the evenings and nights has been on my mind since early 2000 when i began to look into the economics (and created 'economics debunked' and 'banks skanks' small courses).
the language of coned reminds me of the deepest darkest days of my corporate world when the mbas (earliest woke, imo) came in and treated us like complete, total, stupid idiots. and of course, that does nothing to assist with the actual wisdom of using our bountiful resources frugally when it is couched in mealy-mouthed false sincerity and unnecessary hypocrisy.
did you come across this:
The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that you've got it made.
so... mba a communication example of the false sincerity and disdain we yokels who haven't been edumacated are given by the schooled:
we have determined that all the plants in the offices will be removed because of aesthetic concerns and because some of them are toxic and so can harm people's health. you have the option of taken any of them home if you want before they are disposed of on ....
reason: we want to stop paying for their maintenance.
with the hue and cry that ensued it was decided by our leaders and their mouthpieces that the plants could stay if we workers agreed to look after them, conditional to our taking personal responsibility for the ones we will care for by tagging them with our names.
of course, it was inane, imo, and a sign of the ceo looking to justify his multi-million dollar contract by getting blood from the drain stones in the pots; , and because of his contempt for people he could not simply say: i want a bigger bonus and closing the plant contract will help me get that — er, i meant that it will go to your little bit of a bonus at the end of the year. and i have many many other similar and in some ways worse stories.
so... back to my comment:
the ptb are so filled with contempt that they have lost the ability to communicate with as people who have the capability to understand. and so, like the worst of teachers, talk down to their underlings. a sure sign that the system is collapsing.
as to the electrical grid and associated stuff: another international company i worked for announced with glee and greed that the american electrical infrastructure hadn't been properly maintained since the bulk of it was built in the 1950s and 60s and was a gold mine for them now because it was on the verge of physical collapse. (all the money went toward executive salary and golden parachute craziness and then offshoring to the more impoverished slaves than the gringo americanos.)
something i've not seen discussed is the consequences of having injected all those young men who are the physical labourers who maintain all this. hmmmm. where's the popcorn, and the show hasn't even started yet. yup, piloting/pilots gets talked about, and the various 'incidents' to a certain extent. china and tesla will cover the planet — after stripping it of precious metals — with cars and no physical structure and the (mostly men) needed to build and maintain it at home with heart problems or dead. hmmmmm.

Yes
I opted out too and a meter reader still comes by, or I send them a photo. I have had some very high readjustments to my bill. I have heard some people threatened with $100 no access fees. It is a mess. Yes, you can opt out in NY, but ConEd doesn't like you to know about it, and it is an extra $9.50 fee. For New Yorkers please do look into pending legislation that will help us be able to retain or retrieve an analog with no fee in a timely manner, water gas and electric https://www.americansforresponsibletech.org/nysmartmeters https://newyorkers4wiredtech.com/2024/02/19/new-york-state-utility-meter-choice-companion-bill-introduced-in-the-assembly/ Phone calls needed to legislators!

Well, Con Ed could do something intelligent and BUILD MORE POWERPLANTS, particularly since NY State has been pushing 100% electric cars by 2035.
