Oh these adorable scientists studying cute little butterflies. What could be more wholesome? More warm blooded and human?

Except that the application for smell sensing is on deck for a next level generation of killer robots. Swarms of killer drones will be able to act without central control by using pheromone signalling, just as ants do.

Do these scientists know they're building killer robots? Rhetorical question - I suspect they don't. I'm sure they wear cling to their blinders like a child to a security blankie.

That is so true, Jeff!

Computer scientists have always had this mistaken notion that living creatures are just complicated digital computers. This looks like just another instance of that hubris.

Cool (not?) but don't really not interested in what AI does or thinks because AI is artificial - literally and is an end product of mostly imperfect data taken by imperfect humans imperfectly. Science trying to do better than God is arrogance which is a form of ignorance. Yet Pandora's box will never be closed - so here we are for better and worse. God help us.

I don't think it even thinks, it's just a fast calculator! And all this is tragic

Any insect that under goes metamorphosis is candidate for Graphene plasmon chip neural interface experimentation, as the Graphene integrates more deeply, is more controllable.

They took down the South Korean Moth example, as this start up company were able to fly the moth around using a Wii controller. Hence, demonstrating the send and receive capability of nervous tissue control.

It uses Quantum computing with Qubits...

Yep. I wrote about "remote-conteolled" insects at one point, it is so sadistic that I have no words strong enough to express my disgust with this trend

One evening I was treated on a nasty piece of work (or predictive programming??), masquerading as a film in a public moviehouse, which portrayed the merger of a fly and a scientist {male, with or without balls).

Forgot the title - good riddance.

I hate silly and ugly mind-games.

Gaming you is what bullies do. There is as much edification, critique or substance in it as one would find in the brain (or the upload) of Yuval Harari.

"a hardware platform made of two 2D materials, molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) and graphene"

duh, why didn't i think of that

wait til they combine this with pcr for wastewater testing. i smell profits!

On a side note, I was originally going to write this article with a focus on graphene but then just couldn't help focusing on the robotic poetry of the mainstream reporting on this. I suppose if I made the headline a little more scary, like, "OMG Graphene in a New Type of AI That Is Even Scarier Than the Old Type of AI" it would have attracted more scare-clicks. But I am rather underwhelmed with the use of scare-clicks in "dissident"reporting.

"Seriously though, what makes the scientists so damn confident that they know how exactly the butterflies choose their mating partners? What if the butterflies fall in love just like people do?"

So a butterfly female just falls in love with a male butterfly because he has a lot of money ? Or a Porsche ? A big house ? Hmmm ... and yes, i dont wanna know what these so called scientists all do to those butterflies, or any other animals ... or even humans. Definitly nothing poetic.

lol. I meant actually falling in love, with a person, not a big house :))) As far as what the scientists do to animals and to people, it is atrocious

omg! this was so funny!

your description was almost perfect. description by someone who is in a state arrested development after having been alive in a small room filled with books. a kind of hoping a description will be able to create the ability for the blind person to see colour.

we are living in creative times indeed, when our imagination has come to the tipping point of god. isn't ai the ultimate or perhaps penultimate or antepenultimate hubristic hope that man is god? the ability to create the simulation of life so perfectly that the human is tricked/mistaken that it is life. thank you sharing. truly a statement of human inflation into the delusion realms of god-by-book-design.

The scientists don't know everything, not anything 100% correctly. All wisdom and knowledge comes from God who is perfect in wisdom and knowledge and ability. It's His will(ingness) and desire to share His abilities with us that make us who we are - made in His image - for one purpose, to reflect the beautiful, loving, good Being that created us. AI is just a machine, an idol, an inanimate fabrication of man's devising and no way a fitting substitute for a perfect and righteous God, much less of an imperfect human being. God alone gives life, energy and talent to man. The butterflies are lesser creatures reflecting the wisdom that God put in them, fulfilling the purpose for which He made them and for His pleasure. We can learn much from studying the handiwork of God, but can never fully understand or match it. We are not God. AI is not God. ' 'Nuff said.

they have no idea what they are talking about. I could have told my newborn from a thousand squaling babies, because of his voice. The mighty war yop of my ancestors rang as clear to me as if someone had called my name. their superficial grasp of life is unequal to the task. ai is fake. they will tell us it is ai, just like amazon did, when it will really be 200 low paid camera workers from india. they want to say ia can run the planet, then when something goes wrong, there will be no person held to account. Opse! you are not allowed to question the judgement of ai, it is your superior. that is the marketing. I do not buy it.

Yes, I love butterflies; however, I haven't the slightest desire to become one. Nor would I want to inflict my bulk on their physiques. But then the re-imaginers of this world stop at nothing, and so BBC First (dinosaur media in Holland... you know, the one series one can't help liking) features commercials with dripping-wet morons dropping out of bananalike cocoons swaying from inorganic branches. Gross!

Thank you Tessa.

These automaton scientists have no much higher in intelligence than the AI they use and build, have lost all human qualities. Unfortunately there are getting grant money from somewhere to “study” butterflies, a very low point in our human history.
