For 350 years, it has been common knowledge that Man went from bands of hunter-gatherers, to pastoralists, to farming, to industry. In parallel, Man lived in families, in tribes, in villages and then in cities, as technology improved. Technology, the third parallel, took us from the stone age through the bronze age and the iron age to the industrial revolution. All neat, tidy and clearly separable. David Graeber and David Wengrow claim there is no evidence for this. In The Dawn of Everything, they show proof of an unbelievable variety of living styles, governance and intellectual activity all over the world and throughout time. It was never a straight line progression. It was never the result of technology. And possibly most stunning, the larger the population was did not also mean more restrictions, more crime, more laws, or more inequality. This is an important book.
Tessa, Thank you. I enjoy reading your words. They clearly explains how through this pandemic I have seen loved ones, lose their temper with me and at many times, I have tended to think that I was the mad one! I am therapist but now retired from practice. I am also a Zen practitioner.
My work often involved group therapy. However, since this world-wide scare-mongering process began, I have never seen so many ‘hypnotised’ people. At first I was saddened because I have spent most of my working life ‘de-hypnotising’ people, but I seem to have failed with my own loved ones… well they never really asked me what my work entailed, so there’s no surprise there, I guess, but it was second nature for me to try to awaken them. But of course, being hypnotised, in my opinion, they didn’t want to be awakened! I have always said to my own clients, that nobody is immune from the effects of conditioning, brainwashing, propaganda or scare-mongering, not even committed Zen practitioners, as I can attest to that.
The object of zazen (Zen meditation) is to focus on liberating all sentient beings and then comes the realisation of integration with all – but of course, nothing is guaranteed, especially if one is looking for results! It seems to me that this will continue whilst people are hooked into duality. But that very duality, is what encourages us to grow, so this is where most of us are right now.
Reading your article reminds me so much of what used to come up in my self-development groups, and that was, whatever fears were brought into the room, needed to be brought to the surface and looked at, and de-structured, as I used to put it. That way the witness (soul) would see the structure of the fear and this awareness would spontaneously destroy it. Not suppress it, but desensitise it in a higher state of awareness. Each small step of awakening to the conditioning of such fear, created higher states of consciousness. But this was not seeing the world as a bowl of roses, but as it is with all its dangers and its ups and downs.
I remember reading how it was proved, that a group of Zen practitioners would move to various towns where crime and violence were rife (can’t remember where right now), and in every town where they sat in meditation, the was a marked reduction in the violence, but there was no goal for this – goals are not a Zen thing anyway. This may sound a bit over the top, but I believe it to be true. My point here is that meditation works in ways we cannot understand, and Zen meditation is about stilling the mind to no-mind or no-thing. It is from this no-thing or ‘mu’ Japanese Zen that creativity is born. I guess conditions are made ripe for something to evolve.
Since the ‘mind-manipulation’ has began just over a year ago, when I am sitting in zazen, along with the deep breathing that precedes each sitting, I inhale ‘healing light of truth’ through the hara (lower abdomen) and exhale the light to all beings, some people come to mind as I ‘channel’ the light, and then to all beings beyond what I can imagine, if you get my meaning… I feel the ‘soul’ knows where the needs to go as the ‘stuff and nonsense’ of duality fluctuate and at this time, there is a need for it to be neutralised, and for balance. My analytical mind, cannot know how to ‘do’ this, as itself, it is conditioned knowledge and formed from duality. This healing light of truth I feel, is one with all other healing lights in the world at this time in meditation. Each of us is really a light unto ourselves, and yet we are all one in our separateness and the light is there for us to tap into and by receiving it, we are also giving it back and strengthening the source.
This is a brief explanation of what I practice but I think I have probably written enough here (apologies), but I hope that what I have written has had a small degree of the inspiration in the same way that your article has inspire me to share this. ~Derek
This touches deep into my heart, Having felt the shame of staying in relationship with a narcissist, I feel a deep sense of compassion for people in delusion. I stayed to save face, to avoid the shame, grateful my self love won out. Grateful for the friends that spoke up and confronted me when I wasn't yet ready to hear it.
